On the Road . . .

Unexpectedly, I took a road trip to the Iowa Quilt Museum in Winterset, IA. My travel companions were Rita Farro and her friend Phyllis. We marveled at the exhibit, Blue Ribbon Quilts of the Iowa State Fair. The quilts were awesome with workmanship, design and color, but even more amazing were some of the stories behind the quilts. A favorite was Grandmothers' Garden, from the Serena Linn family, a hexagon quilt that took five generations to finish. Life certainly interrupts plans, but through vision, tenacity and nudges from family & friends, those 2300 + hexagons were finally finished into a treasure. Suddenly, my less than a decade old quilt UFO's seem so youthful! I'll get to them ....

On the drive back to Chicago, we pulled over at a rest stop that blew our minds. Between exits 267 & 271 on eastbound I-80 in Cedar County, Iowa, the 15+ year old structure is reminiscent of a turn of the century train depot. The artwork depicts 15 stops along the Underground Railroad. The "language of quilts" were displayed as wall art. Outside under the quilt tiles was a raised motif of needle pulling thread around the perimeter of the building. Quilts tell stories in many ways. Look around and you may see quilts creating stories through the generations.

FYI . . .

A statement about the automatic needle threader on your sewing machine:

Is your automatic needle threader threading the needle? Threads are available in many weights. With finer threads, a smaller needle is required. Most automatic needle threaders can easily thread needle sizes 75/11 and larger. Needle sizes smaller than 75/11 may need to be threaded the original way, by hand.

Serger Needles

Consult your owner's manual! Many new sergers use home sewing needle system 130/705 H (flat shank with a scarf). SCHMETZ Stretch, Jersey, Topstitch and Universal are popular needle choices. Some older sergers use needle systems BLX1 and DCX1.

SCHMETZ Overlock Needles

ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK are popular needle systems. Check your owner's manual! Here's how serger needles are different from our home sewing needles:

  • Serger needles have a groove on the front and back sides of the blade to reduce skipped stitches. The second long groove is necessary to create chain stitches like overlock or coverlock stitches.

  • ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK have increased strength due to a reinforced blade leading to less needle breakage and straighter stitches.

  • ELx705 and ELx705CF have a slightly rounded point for universal use.

  • ELx705CF SUK has a medium ball point suitable for many knit fabrics.

  • ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK have a Chrome Finish (CF), increasing wear resistance.

Check your owner's manual! SCHMETZ ELx705, ELx705CF and ELx705CF SUK are used on overlock or coverlock machines.
