On the Road

February blew out and my credit cards just exploded! First I attended and gave a SCHMETZ class at QuiltCon West in Pasadena, CA. I was in awe by the quilt exhibits and vigorously tempted by fabric vendors, but safely kept my credit card tucked away. With just a day to return home to reorganize - do laundry - I was off to four magic days at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, WA as the official Facebook hostess. Go check out the great pics! Look for the little red dress & black hat icon. Until the final day, my credit cards saw minor use, then I found luxurious wools and linen fabrics from Marcy Tilton that generated my sewing explosion. I found colorful Kaffe Fassett fabrics at Island Quilter to back the top I made from last year's purchase - I'll show pics in a few months when the quilt is done. I also found Vogue/McCall patterns, Trims on Wheels' butterfly appliques, Glitz & Glamour t-shirt bling, The Sewing Workshop, Vogue Fabrics and discovered a new upcycle designer, Paganoonoo. Yes, my husband's colorful shirts are once again in danger of upcycling, this time into a great shirt or dress for me.

From these two events, I believe the world of sewing and quilting is exploding with new ideas, notions and the talent to take our hobbies to unknown creative levels. Heck yes, I was, and am inspired! Put both of these shows on your bucket list along with next month's Original Sewing & Quilting Expo where I will be teaching two SCHMETZ classes in Lakeland FL.

Then open your sewing world a bit wider and click SCHMETZ Inspired to SEW below to check out how Cheryl Sleboda is lighting up the world of art quilting. Creativity is boundless!
I hope our paths soon cross at an event. If not, I then invite you to like & follow SCHMETZneedles on Facebook.

The Eye of the Needle

That's not just a little piece of steel making your machine stitches.
German engineering designs, calculates, tests and inspects the SCHMETZ needle.
Take for instance the eye . . . did you know that needles have different eye shapes?

The most popular needle, the Universal, has an eye that is 40% the width of the blade.
Really! There are three other needles with larger eyes, the Embroidery and even
more pronounced is the elongated eye of the Metallic and Topstitch needles.

Now what does a larger eye mean? There is less friction on the thread as it passes through the eye. Ever sew with a thread that breaks or tends to shred? Guess what? Use a needle with a larger eye. If you have old thread or maybe poor quality thread, use a needle with a larger eye. The thread and needle work hard and fast. Help them out when you can with a larger eye.

At last ... easy to identify SCHMETZ needles! Most needles now have two bands of color - the top band to identify needle type and the lower band to identify size. The Universal needle has just one band of color for size. Yahoo!
