March 2018

On the Road . . .

A big thank you for attending my SCHMETZ classes at QuiltCon and Sewing & Stitchery Expo. Besides reviewing basic needle information such as the meaning of all those little numbers on the needle package and the variety of needle types for different fabrications and projects, the timing was perfect for announcing a new needle.

Hooray! The SCHMETZ Super NonStick Needle is available now. No more gummy, sticky needles when working with adhesives on machine applique and machine embroidery. Check out below the outstanding features of this new needle.

If you are in the Atlanta area, I hope you will drop by the Original Sewing & Quilting Expo, where I am giving a SCHMETZ class on Thursday and Friday. Plus, I’ll have a sample of the new SCHMETZ Super NonStick needle for everyone that attends my class.

Needle Sizes
The smaller the number, the smaller the needle.

Needle size is determined by the diameter of the needle blade. The measurement is taken using the metric system in hundredths of a millimeter. A sewing machine needle with a blade diameter of 0.80 is a needle size 80.

Other needle sizing designations are referred to as the Asian, Singer or International systems. Household sewing machine needle sizes range from 8 to 19 and are partnered to the metric size. Size 80 equals size 12. Size 90 equals size 14. Sizes published in patterns, books and magazines frequently show the metric and Singer systems such as 80/12.

The smaller the size, the smaller the needle. A size 60 needle is smaller than a size 120.
