February 2018

On the Road . . .

Spring show season is just around the corner. Each year I welcome winter for nesting. Yes, nesting. After the holiday frenzy, l am cozy at home sewing with winter snow and winds outside my window. The aroma from the crockpot wafts into my sewing spot promising an easy and tasty meal with leftovers and in the background my husband plays rock and roll or Motown music.

Currently, I am juggling three outfits. Project one is this lemon cream jacket embellished with two orange doilies made years ago by Grandma Johnson. Her workmanship was impeccable. Tapping into my ample stash of exquisite doilies is a challenge. I don't want to destroy the integrity of the doilies, but I don't want them hiding in a dark closet either. Using doilies as an embellishment on this Pendleton wool vest is a welcome solution. Project two is a design challenge. The fabric coloration and print design is bold, tending toward awkward. Each pattern piece was individually cut, so I could check the print placement or misplacement. Project two, a dress, is either brilliant or an experiment. At this writing, I refer to the dress as the bug eye, body parts dress. I am uncertain of its fate. Project three, an Italian lace tunic with an exposed zipper should go lickety split. Fingers crossed . . .

My travel schedule begins late February presenting SCHMETZ needle classes. My intention is to expand your needle knowledge and elevate your confidence in needle selection with a few giggles. Without a doubt, I am energized by meeting you and inspired by your creations. The SCHMETZ needle is small, but I always say it is mighty in bringing people together that love to sew and quilt.

Meet me at one of the shows! I'll be at QuiltCon in Pasadena, Puyallup for Sewing & Stitchery Expo, Atlanta for the Original Sewing & Quilting Expo, and . . . Check my schedule below. Maybe I will have the nerve to wear my bug eye, body parts dress or at least you can ask about it.

SCHMETZ Twin Needles

Twin needles feature two needles mounted on a single shank with a cross-bar. A twin needle creates two rows of parallel stitches simultaneously on top of the fabric and zigzag stitches underneath. The first number (i.e., 2.0/80) identifies the distance between the needles  in millimeters. The second number states the needle size.
